Synth Index alpha v0.1 lets developers and their agents search reviewed research. Each result points to the exact version of the research write-up it came from. You search from your own code or agent through the API, the synth-ai Python SDK, or an MCP server. The website is where you sign up, create an API key, add funds, and check your usage.

What you can do

  • Fast Search returns results quickly at a flat price.
  • Deep Search (beta) takes longer and digs further. It keeps running in the background, so you can check back on it, follow its progress, cancel it, or collect the result later without paying for a second search.
  • Search from the API, the Python SDK, or MCP. The MCP server lets MCP-compatible agents search the Index directly: install the SDK and run synth-ai-index-mcp.
  • Every search needs an API key and a way to pay, and every search reports what it cost.
  • On the website, sign up, create an API key, add funds to your wallet, and see your usage. Search itself happens in your code or agent, not in the browser.

Pricing

  • Fast Search: 5¢ per search that returns results.
  • Deep Search (beta): 5¢ plus the AI model cost it actually used, passed through at cost and rounded up to the next cent. That is typically 7–10¢. You set a maximum charge for each Deep search, anywhere from 10¢ to $1 (we recommend 25¢), and you are never charged more than that.

To pay from your wallet, an organization admin first turns on wallet payments for Search, and each request says it may use the wallet and sets its maximum charge. Cancelled searches, and searches that fail before returning anything, are free. A Deep search that runs out of time without finding anything can still be charged for the work it did, up to your maximum. Each search's usage record is the final word on what you paid. Deep Search also has per-key and daily limits; see Index search and billing for the limits and the details.

Not in alpha v0.1

  • An endpoint that writes a direct answer to your question.
  • Downloading the files that results cite.
  • Citations that point to a specific passage.
  • A guaranteed response time.
  • Free, anonymous, or zero-data-retention Search. These are planned for v0.2.
  • Contributing your own research to the Index. This is planned for v0.2.

Versioning

"Alpha v0.1" is the Synth Index product version. It ships in the synth-ai Python SDK, version 0.20.2 or later. The latest published SDK is 0.22.1.

Get started

  • Create an account and API key at usesynth.ai.
  • Install the SDK: pip install "synth-ai>=0.20.2".
  • Follow the Index quickstart to run your first search or connect synth-ai-index-mcp to your agent.
  • Keep your API key in a local secret store, never in source code or an agent prompt.
